Introducing...Fire Door FoamPosted on 2017-08-31
Shortly after joining Fire & Acoustic Seals in January 2016 I engaged in a conversation with Midland Building Products Senior Site Consultant, Colin Lockett. This discussion was based on feedback Colin was receiving from the many construction sites he’d visited up and down the country. There was clearly a lot of confusion about the different methods of fire stopping being used to seal the gap between walls and fire door frames. This became more apparent after the revision of BS8214, published in December 2016. Contractors now faced a variety of fire stopping material options depending on gap size, fire rating and frame component. This could involve using mastic, mineral fibre wool, PU foam and timber packings; a complexity of solutions to one problem.
After debating the issue with Colin in numerous conversations over the ensuing weeks I decided to research in more detail. It seemed obvious that an ‘all in one solution’ was needed. The research and development team at Fire & Acoustic Seals set about sourcing products that reduced this confusion. By February 2017 after searching all over Europe, we’d found our product and began indicative testing and trials. We were mindful during the development period that contractors wanted a simple solution, standard methods of fixing and utilising the current PVC type packers available was the obvious way to do this.
The initial trials undertaken on Fire Door Foam were providing excellent results so we planned our first full scale British and European test programme at Exova Warrington Fire. We achieved good successes early in the process and we were able to produce a product Global Assessment to provide users with a scope of application. During this process we began to realise that we had underestimated the scope of Fire Door Foam and this amazing product was capable of so much more. Testing is still ongoing as we are really putting the concept through its paces, for now we are excited to release a solution that is the answer to so many problems but keep your eyes peeled as Fire Door Foam has the capability for even more.
Upon receiving the Global Assessment, we set about marketing the campaign and getting ready for launch. Due to the demand for Fire Door Foam it was a race against time, we were receiving enquiries as word got about that we had a product coming out soon. Since launch in late August we’ve been busy keeping up with demand and we are pleased with the reception customers have given Fire Door Foam. The biggest benefit they tell us, is that it doesn’t require any special intumescent packers, it covers the majority of applications on site and above all it saves time and money.
We’re extremely proud of Fire Door Foam but we don’t plan to rest on our laurels, we are working on stretching the capabilities of this product, to continue being at the forefront of innovation and working with our customers to provide solutions to their problems.
To summarise, Fire Door Foam is a fully tested compliant product that provides a clean, easy and cost effective solution to sealing fire door frames and that is just the tip of the iceberg.
