Can different brands of fire door seals be used together on the same door set?

No, fire door seals, intumescent strips and smoke seals used on a fire door set should be supplied by the same manufacturer and installed in accordance with the door set's specification, certification and fire test evidence. Fire door seals are tested as part of a complete door assembly, and combining products from different manufacturers may affect the fire performance, smoke control performance and compliance of the door set. Always refer to the door manufacturer's installation guidance and certification before replacing or upgrading any fire door seals.

Can fire door seals be cut to length and joined together?

Yes, most fire door seals, intumescent strips and fire and smoke seals are supplied in standard 2.1 metre lengths and can be cut to the required size during installation. Where a longer seal length is required, compatible seals can be butted together to achieve the necessary coverage. Longer lengths may also be available upon request, depending on the seal type and specification. Always ensure installation is carried out in accordance with the product guidance and the fire door manufacturer's requirements.

Can fire door seals be retrospectively fitted to the edge of a door?

Yes, fire door seals, intumescent strips and certain fire and smoke seals can often be retrospectively fitted to the edge of an existing fire door. However, because fire door seals form part of a tested fire door assembly, it is important to ensure that any modifications are compatible with the door's certification and fire performance requirements. We recommend consulting the fire door manufacturer before carrying out any alterations to confirm the correct seal type, size and installation method for the specific door set.

Do brush seals provide acoustic protection?

No, standard brush seals are primarily designed to provide fire and smoke protection by helping to restrict the passage of smoke and flames through gaps around a door. If acoustic performance or sound reduction is required, we recommend selecting a fire and acoustic seal with integrated fins or flippers, which are specifically designed to help improve sound insulation whilst maintaining the required fire performance. Always refer to the product datasheet, test evidence and certification to ensure the seal is suitable for your application.

How do I know which fire door strip to order?

The correct fire door strip, intumescent seal or fire and smoke door seal should always be selected in accordance with the fire door manufacturer's test evidence, certification and installation instructions. Fire door seals are tested as part of a complete door assembly, and using the correct seal is essential to maintaining the door set's fire performance and compliance. Before ordering, refer to the relevant fire test evidence and certification documents to identify the approved seal type, size and specification for your fire door. If you are unsure, please contact our technical team for guidance.
